SEBASTIAN BACH IS FINALLY "CANADIAN":

December 20, 2007

Canadian metalheads have always laid claim to Sebastian Bach, but the Canadian government has never accepted the singer as one of our own until now. For the first time in his 20-year career, Bach is Cancon-approved. Music from his new Angel Down album officially qualifies as Canadian content, according to the Canadian Radio-television And Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

The former Skid Row frontman is ecstatic about the development, even if he's a wee bit confused on Canadian bureaucracy, personifying a regulation ("Cancon") and not the CRTC as the official body recognizing his album as Canadian content.

"For 20 years I've been waiting for this," he says soon after hearing the news. "I'm from Peterborough and for Cancon to finally make me a Canadian artist is very heavy to me and it's incredible."

According to the CRTC website, a musical selection is judged on its Canadian content in four ways: music, artist, production and lyrics. If two of those areas are wholly Canadian, then the music can qualify as Cancon.

Bach has been trying to figure out these regulations for quite a while, sometimes with amusing results.

"It did frustrate me for years," he admits. "And I can remember one day, in the last five years, I was in Canada and I was Googling what it takes to become a Cancon artist.

"And I found this thing, I think it was on cbc.com, The History Of Cancon. So I'm watching these video clips and the very last clip is an interview with the head of Cancon [Bach is likely referring to someone from the CRTC] in Ottawa, sitting at her desk and on the wall behind her is a painting by my dad [visual artist David Bierk]. Oh my God! One of my dad's paintings is behind her and she's explaining what is Cancon. I almost fell down when I realized that the big painting on the wall is done by Sebastian Bach's father.

"I was like, 'You people need to figure this out. There's no way the stain on my daddy's pants can't be Canadian when his painting's on the wall of the Cancon offices.'"

Now that Angel Down is CRTC-friendly, Bach can concentrate his efforts on other hoser-ish pursuits. Right now, he's doing very well as an ambassador of sorts for the Trailer Park Boys. After appearing on their show, he took our nation's favourite dope-smoking ne'erdowells on his tour with Guns N' Roses last year and introduced the boys to their new biggest fan, Axl Rose.

"Now Bubbles is one of his best friends," Bach says. "Axl flew Bubbles to Japan and L.A. and Australia and all over the world — getting drunk, smoking fucking weed."

Despite Bach's admirable work promoting Canadian culture abroad, the singer is still clearly nervous about staying on the CRTC's good side. When asked if his recent success on MTV's Celebrity Rap Superstar could lead to a rap album down the line, he vehemently denies it in the name of patriotism.

"I don't think that would be Cancon-approved. I'll leave that to Snow."
