TOP TWENTY-FIVE SONGS OF 2006:

It is hard narrowing down thousands of songs into a list of the Top 25. I started out with around 100 songs and just started chopping the list down one by one. As I was doing that I noticed that lots of great tunes were getting the shaft, but that just shows how much great music is coming out these days. Here is my list of Top 25 songs of 2006, it isn't perfect (and would likely change if I made the list tomorrow), but all these songs spent lots of time in my CD player this year.

1. KID EGO - Ignite The Tide
Band Website - CD Review
Kid Ego takes top honors for a second time this year with a song I didn't care for at first listen. Originally some of the distorted vocals left me cold, but with each listen the song grew on me. It was fresh, different and unique - and needed to be played at 11!

2. RHINO BUCKET - Hammer & Nail
Band Website - CD Review
Attitude has always been as important to a great rock song as the musicianship itself, and few bands have as much attitude as Rhino Bucket. Just try and sing/scream along to the chorus of this song, if you don't lose your voice by the end you may have a future in hard rock.

3. BIG COCK - Fucked Up!
Band Website - CD Review
I don't mind excessive swearing in songs as long as it isn't a lame attempt to shock, and the only thing shocking here is how great the song is. Travel back to 1989 with chugging guitars, heavy beats and soaring vocals - Big Cock recreates 80s metal better than anyone these days.

4. BACKWASH - She's Rock 'N' Roll
Band Website - CD Review
To be honest, this song got played by me more than any other in 2006. The only reason it didn't find itself in the number one spot is because of the silly verse in which the band spells out their name. Everything else about this tune is simplified perfection and contains one of the most memorable riffs of the year.

5. FUNNY MONEY - By The Balls
Band Website - CD Review
Steve Whiteman and company used the tail-end of 2006 to showcase their most consistent album yet. Filled with several great tracks, it is "By The Balls" that would fit in perfectly with any Kix live gig.

6. WOLFCHILD - Don't Shoot Me
Band Website - CD Review
This track got my vote for best riff of 2006. Based around the great guitar sound is a heavy beat and powerful vocals. It will be interesting to see what Wolfchild sounds like with their new vocalist.

7. STAMPEDE QUEEN - In It For The Money
Band Website - CD Review
Canada's Stampede Queen are lots of fun as this song states in the lyrics. You just know bands like this have to be a riot in a live setting.

8. BUCKCHERRY - Crazy Bitch
Band Website - CD Review
There were only two songs on the local radio that I would crank when they came on, the latest Jet single and Buckcherry's "Crazy Bitch". Of course commercial radio had a field day censoring this track, but on CD you get the real deal.

9. CHRIS LANEY - Instinct Animal
Band Website - CD Review
Zan Clan and Animal member Chris Laney decided to record a track of his own on a Perris Records compilation and judging from this he should record more. For two years in a row everything this guy has touched has turned to gold.

10. SWEET TEAZE - Heartless Woman
Band Website - CD Review
Suncity Records has been uncovering old albums that were recorded but never saw the light of day until now. "Heartless Woman" is more proof that lots of killer material was buried by the grunge tidal wave. Finally bands like Sweet Teaze are finding a venue to get their music back in the hands of the fans.

11. CRANK COUNTY DAREDEVILS - We Want It All

12. STRAIGHTFORK - Women, Whiskey, Weed & Lies
