METALLICA TOSS OUT SONGS FOR THE FIRST TIME: For Metallica, less has always meant more. Instead of recording dozens of songs, picking the best ones and discarding others like many current rockers, Metallica have recorded and released everything they have written. Until now. On Tuesday, in an unannounced appearance in the chat room on the band's fan club Web site, Metclub.com, drummer Lars Ulrich said that for the first time ever, Metallica have trashed songs that didn't make the grade. Currently the band is working on "round two of the keepers." Since they entered the studio with frontman James Hetfield last February, Metallica have recorded around 30 new songs, and Ulrich expects between 10 and 20 to end up on the band's still-untitled next album, which could be finished by January, and which will likely come out in late spring. While Metallica will probably tour for the record, they still haven't chosen a bassist to replace Jason Newsted, who left the group in January 2001. Producer Bob Rock has played the basslines for the current album, but the band has said he will not join them on the road.
