History:
Zebra are an excellent, if often underrated, hard rock trio. The band proudly wore their classic rock influences, from bands such as Led Zeppelin, on their sleeve throughout their mildly successful career.
The group was formed in New Orleans in the mid-70's by Randy Jackson (vocals/guitar), Felix Hanemann (bass/keyboards) and Guy Gelso (drums), and named themselves after an image on an old Vogue magazine cover. For years the band built up a solid fan base in both their home state and in New York, where they would split their time, and a couple of impressive demos would catch the attention of Atlantic records. Renowned producer Jack Douglas helped the band unleash Zebra, a debut that would shock critics and explode commercially. The debut became the fastest selling album in Atlantic records history as it shot up to #29 on the Billboard charts, helped by the success of the singles "Tell Me What You Want" and "Who's Behind The Door?"
But as quickly as the band rose to stardom, their star would burn out just as fast. No Tellin' Lies stumbled out of the gate and when compared to the debut was both a commercial and musical disappointment. By the time 3.V was released, the general public had all but forgotten about Zebra. The disc would prove to be an excellent return to form, but sadly it was all but ignored and would go down as an underrated treasure. This would lead to Atlantic dropping the band (after a final live release), and its members put the band itself on the backburner.
Jackson resurfaced with China Rain and Jefferson Airplane, but when he and Gelso helped Hanemann with his Rock Candy project the trio realized it was time for Zebra to return. 1997 saw the band return with some reunion shows, and now Zebra IV spells a full-blown return of this criminally ignored rock band.
