History:
A raw and crude metal band that never really seemed able to capture their awesome live
sound on album, Wolfsbane would become primarily known as a metal footnote when
lead singer Blaze Bayley replaced Bruce Dickinson in Iron Maiden.
Wolfsbane was formed in Tamworth, England by Bayley, Jase Edwards (guitar),
Jeff Hateley (bass) and Steve Ellett (drums). With their high energy
stage shows, it wasn't long before they had a rabid fan base called the "Howling Mad
Shitheads" and were able to land a major label deal.
The debut (which was often compared to early Van Halen) charted in the U.K.
Top 50 but failed to make any impression on American audiences. However,
because they had made such a name for themselves with their over-the-top live show,
they were able to open for such bands as Iron Maiden in the early 90s.
Their next full-length album, Down Fall The Good Guys, was a better
effort but still failed commercially and the band was dropped. By this time Dickinson
had announced he was leaving Iron Maiden and Bayley was asked to
audition, he declined and continued touring with Wolfsbane. But it was becoming
apparent that the band would never hit it big, and during recording for the more punk
sounding final album, Bayley changed his mind. Bayley was named the
new lead singer for Iron Maiden on December 23, 1993, and Wolfsbane was
officially dead.
Bayley's tenure with Iron Maiden would only last for two
poorly received albums; he is currently pursuing a solo career. If a producer was able
to harness their unrelenting live sound onto a studio album they would have been huge,
but sadly Wolfsbane remain largely forgotten.
