Review:
The story which led to the existence of Revolution Renaissance is surrounded by quite a few mysteries. Initially planned to be recorded as the next Stratovarius album, the ten tracks presented on New Era now end up as the debut of a completely new band.
But the term 'band' seems to be a little misplaced in the context of Revolution Renaissance. Vocal duties are handled by three different singers, those being former Helloween shouter Michael Kiske, Edguy frontman Tobias Sammet and Pasi Rantanen. All three singers had no influence in the songwriting though, which is solely handled by Timo Tolkki himself. So far it may seem that this is a Stratovarius album without Timo Kotipelto's vocals...and well it is...sort of.
The opener "Heroes" could have been right off the self-titled Stratovarius record, while up-tempo tracks like "Glorious And Divine" remind of the Visions album. All in all New Era is probably too laid back if you've liked the early Stratovarius years, as the whole affair reminds me much more of Edguy's Rocket Ride than anything else. Although it does not reach the same level of catchiness Edguy provides, all songs are well done, with "The Last Night On Earth" being the highlight for me.
Let's wait and see if Revolution Renaissance is going to develop into a 'real' band or if it stays a simple renaissance of Tolkki's ego. Meanwhile you should be able to enjoy this offering if you like any of the earlier mentioned bands. In a year with dozens of strong releases New Era doesn't really stand out, as it unfortunately, in my opinion, just lacks a real stand-out track.
