History:
Known as The London Quireboys in America and simply the Quireboys elsewhere, they came across as a nineties version of the Faces. Their brand of good time retro rock was on the verge of hitting big when a similar band named the Black Crowes appeared on the scene and proceded to upstage and steal the Quireboys audience.
The Quireboys, originally using the name Queerboys, formed in London, England, in the mid 80's. The group consisted of Spike (vocals, who sounded exactly like Rod Stewart), Guy Bailey (guitar), Ginger (guitar), Nigel Mogg (bass), Coze (drums) and Chris Johnstone (keyboards). They released a couple singles on an independent label before breaking into the big leagues. Ginger, who went on to form the Wildhearts, and Coze were replaced by Guy Griffen and Ian Wallace for the debut disc. A Bit Of What You Fancy made waves in Europe with four charting singles and even had minor success in America where "7 O'Clock" and the ballad "I Don't Love You Anymore" received considerable airplay.
Three long years later the band returned for their next album, which would include new drummer Rudy Richman. Producer Bob Rock cleaned up the Quireboys rough edges and left them with a less satisfying record, but by this time the band's audience had moved on anyway. The band promptly broke up realizing that any momentum they had was lost. Their final album was a collection b-sides and demos.
The band would regroup with bassist Tim Bewlay and drummer Guy Hansen for a short UK tour in 1995 before reforming with Spike, Griffin, Mogg, Luke Bossendorfer (guitar) and Martin Henderson (drums) for their This Is Rock 'N' Roll release. Various members have formed bands and recorded as solo artists over the years, with Spike joining forces with Tyla of Dogs D'Amour fame and also recording under Gods Hotel. Another new studio album arrived in 2004 with a revamped line-up; it appears as if the Quireboys will continue to release soulful hard rock till the day they die.
