Review:
London returned in 2008 with a 'new' CD and also have some live shows lined up. Unfortunately this is not a CD of brand new music. Instead it is a live-recorded session handled by Alice Cooper and Steppenwolf producer Richie Podolor that took place in 1989 right after their appearance in 'The Decline Of Western Civilization: Metal Years' cult movie, from which, I guess, they took the name for this album. Other than that repertoire, the have added their version of the Sunset Strip classic "Shout At The Devil" to this CD.
With all of that being said, The Metal Years is not a must have for the casual rock fan, but it is for a London fan. At this moment in their career the band was at their peak, and the musicianship was tight, as I have witnessed by listening to this album. All of their 'hits' are here including some of my favorites like "Ride You Thru The Night" and "Russian Winter" as well as a cover of The Beatles' "Oh Darling". Unfortunately my other personal favorite, "It's Rock N' Roll" from Non Stop Rock, is missing.
London's version of "Shout At The Devil" (recorded in 2008), is a little different than Motley Crue's, but it doesn't surpass the original. On it we can hear how much has the band changed over the years, but Nadir D'Priest's voice is pretty much the same, just a little lower and rougher.
If you are a London fan you should get this CD and you'll have a pleasant evening of listening to some of their lost gems.
