Review:
If you were expecting the new Behind The Player DVD to be the second coming of Ace Frehley's Ace Vision fan club series, you'll be very disappointed. The truth is that Behind The Player is a an instructional video series that has showcased artists like George Lynch, Duff McKagan and Tim Skold in the past, so you have to take it for what it's worth. I will go as far as to say that this DVD is for guitar geeks and die-hard Kiss and Ace Frehley completists only though.
The Behind The Player DVD gives you a personal lesson by Ace on how to play the Kiss classics "Shock Me" and "Cold Gin." There is no full concert performance footage on here, just clips, but it does include some jam sessions with special guests like guitarists John 5 and Dokken's George Lynch as well as drummers Tommy Clufetos and Matt Sorum and Cult bassist Chris Wyse.
I have to say that the highlights are the interview featured in the Electronic Press Kit and the clip of Frehley, Wyse and Scot Coogan jamming on "Pain In The Neck," which is featured in an instrumental form. I thought that this track was one of the low points on the Anomaly album, but it's much stronger without the detestable lyrics. I was also impressed by the Guitar Hero inspired animated video tabs that depict how Ace plays both "Shock Me" and "Cold Gin."
If you're just learning rock 'n' roll what better place to start than with some Kiss classics? Played by the real guy that wore the 'Space Ace' paint... the one and only Ace Frehley.
