History:
A melodic hard rock band, Cry Wolf emerged from the L.A. scene with a tasteful
debut album that made them famous in Japan, but almost completely ignored stateside.
Timmy Hall (vocals), Steve McKnight (guitar) and Phil
Deckard (bass) formed the group during 1985 in the Bay Area with a drummer and
keyboardist. It wouldn't be long before the boys started working the Los Angeles
club circuit and recruiting Hall's friend Paul Cancilla to be the new
drummer. During recording sessions for their demo, the keyboardist left and they
were forced to change the band name. Cry Wolf was selected out of a list of fan
submitted names when Motley Crue tickets were offered to the individual
that came up with the best band name.
The demo was so well received overseas that Cry Wolf was convinced
to release it as a limited red vinyl in Japan and do a handful of live shows; all of
which sold out. The band was promptly offered a recording contract and released their
critically acclaimed self-titled debut. The Japanese success led to an American
recording contract and the re-release of the debut album. Crunch, with a
slightly different track listing, featured the exceptional single "Pretender". But
whereas they were able to sell out shows in Japan, the band went largely unnoticed in
America.
While touring in support of Crunch the band's tour bus was stolen as
well as all their gear. With that Cancilla was ready to leave and a new drummer
was brought in, but with grunge on the way the band decided to part ways. Since the break-up
Cancilla has appeared doing guest work on Kuni albums and McKnight has been seen helping
out former Anthrax frontman Neil Turbin, while Hall and
McKnight have pursued solo careers.
