Review:
If smoking pot makes a person mellow, then Backwash must be the sober version of The Black Crowes. You know the type of music I mean - no-frills retro rock based around simple guitar riffs, flared pants, cowboy boots, a cigarette hanging from every mouth and an ass-kicking swagger. When it comes to shitkicking rock 'n' roll like this there are few bands as catchy as Switzerland's Backwash.
Also thrown into the blues-based mix are hints of three chord AC/DC boogie and Electric Angels glam (especially on "Crash"). What really makes the disc stand out - besides the fact that every single song is strong - are the riffs. It seems like the band has an endless supply of simple yet effective guitar riffs. "My Good & Bad", "No Fun No Gun", "Head Trash" are flawless and work incredibly well - even the lone ballad "Feeling Like A Bitch" is delivered with enough vocal pain to make it worthy of a spin. But I haven't even mentioned the best parts yet!
The best of the bunch are "Tell My Line" and "She's Rock 'N' Roll", two songs that have received endless play around here lately. "Tell My Line" is delivered with a casual attitude, no flash or showboating, and you won't be able to stop your foot from tapping along. Even better yet is "She's Rock 'N' Roll" which contains the best riff on the entire album. The song is so fucking good that even a silly verse in which the band spells out their name can't bring this tune down.
Kick Ass! is the name of the disc, and is a fitting title if I've ever heard one. Grab yourself a drink, sit back, relax and enjoy this album...I have for months now. In my opinion, Backwash has recorded one of the best albums of 2006 - an essential CD!
